New report underscores the urgent need for clear labeling and regulatory action on animal-derived ingredients in medications.
A new report highlights critical issues regarding animal-derived ingredients (ADI) in medications, stressing the need for clearer labeling and regulatory action. With up to 75% of popular medications containing ADIs, patients with conditions like alpha-gal syndrome (AGS) face severe risks. This issue affects not only AGS patients but also those with dietary restrictions, ethical concerns, and religious practices.
Key findings include:
Patient Impact: 91.8% of AGS patients have modified their medication use, with 18.1% contacting manufacturers multiple times for ADI information. Yet, 40% of pharmaceutical companies’ medical information departments could not provide accurate details.
Regulatory Call: The report urges the FDA to mandate clear labeling of ADIs, promote plant-based or synthetic alternatives, and introduce a certification symbol for animal-free products.
"Transparent labeling is essential for patient safety and inclusion," said Sachin Shah, PharmD. "We call on the FDA to take decisive action to ensure medications are accurately labeled and accessible."
