Figure 1. NIH definition of women's health

49.5% of the world population is female and in the United States, women generally live longer and healthier lives than men. However, women still face a variety of health issues. The National Institutes of Health (NIH) defines women’s health as diseases or conditions related to women (Figure 1). This includes not just physical, but also emotional well-being. In 2019, the leading causes of female deaths were heart disease and cancer (breast and cervical). Other women's health concerns include mental health issues, such as depression and anxiety, or reproductive health issues like polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS), endometriosis, or sexually transmitted infections.

Women have different symptoms (vs men)

Although women and men can be diagnosed with the same medical conditions, women often experience different symptoms compared to men (e.g. stroke, chest pain, and stress). Due to the difference in symptoms, early health screenings are crucial to women’s health.

Important Health Screenings for Women

With limited healthcare services available and fear of exposure during the COVD-19 pandemic, 36% of adults either delayed or canceled their healthcare visits. Health screenings can help detect disease when it is treatable as well as prevent serious long-term issues that can develop if left unchecked. The table below shows suggested health screenings for women at various ages.

Reproductive Stages of Women’s Health

One part of women’s health focuses on gynecological and reproductive health since women experience health events that males do not. These involve menstruation, pregnancy, and menopause. Learn more about the different reproductive cycles women go through in the table below.
