Sharon Forsyth: A Game Changer for the Alpha-Gal Community

In a world where the need for animal-free alternatives in healthcare is gaining momentum, one individual is spearheading a movement to raise awareness and provide support for those affected by Alpha-gal Syndrome. Meet Sharon Forsyth, the director of the Alpha-gal Syndrome Awareness Campaign and the driving force behind the Alpha-gal Information website. In this interview, Sharon shares her journey, motivations, and the exciting work that she is doing to advocate for those affected by Alpha-gal Syndrome.

If you were an animal-free drug, what would you be?

If I were an animal-free drug, I would be an animal-free pancreatic enzyme replacement therapy, because we really need one!

Tell us about a formative moment in your life that makes you the person that you are today.

Reading The Changing Face of Anaphylaxis, a study that found that at one clinic, alpha-gal syndrome caused more anaphylactic reactions than all other food allergies combined, convinced me that I needed to raise awareness about this allergy.

Can you tell us a personal experience that pulled you into the animal–derived ingredients, animal cruelty, or climate change landscape?

My husband and I have worked in conservation most of our lives, so we have always been aware of the urgency of addressing climate disruption. Only after I developed alpha-gal syndrome and became an advocate for the alpha-gal community did I realize how ubiquitous animal-derived ingredients are in drugs and other medical products and of the threats they pose to the alpha-gal community.

Can you share a bit about what you do?

I have worked in conservation in one capacity or another most of my life, but now my work as director of the Alpha-gal Syndrome Awareness Campaign and managing the Alpha-gal Information website take up a lot of my time.

What are you working on that’s new and exciting (possibly in the animal-free space)?

I help people in the alpha-gal community find alternatives to drugs and medical products that contain mammal-derived products. I wouldn't be able to do this without the help of VeganMed. It's often very hard for people with alpha-gal syndrome to get pharmaceutical manufacturers to respond to requests for information about the source of ingredients in their products. They often tell us that we need our doctors or pharmacists to contact them, but our doctors and pharmacists don't have time to do this, don't know how to go about it, and usually tell us they can't help.

Is there anything else you would like to share with us?

The whole alpha-gal community is incredibly grateful for the help VeganMed provides us. I don't know what we would do without you! Thank you, from all of us!
