Meet the Team: Jasmine Uchi

Updated: Oct 23

Jasmine Uchi, our Director of Medical Affairs and Operations, holds a pharmacy degree from California Northstate University, College of Pharmacy. Internally, she’s known as the “alpha-gal pharmacist”. (Fun fact: She was the first one in the company to make the observation of this allergy!) Since joining our team in 2021, she has played a pivotal role, contributing significantly to our success.

Why did you join the VeganMed team?

I’ve always prioritized finding a job that I’m not only passionate about but also making an impact. The work we do at VeganMed is exactly that. We are continuously committed to making a difference and being an advocate for those with Alpha-gal Syndrome, and those with dietary, religious, or personal preferences. I am always so grateful to be surrounded with such a supportive team who is just as determined to push for transparency and transformation within healthcare as much as I am.

What is your favorite animal-free product?

My favorite certified animal-free product would definitely be the Evoke Skincare line. We love a good skincare routine. I use the Firm Skin Serum and the Vitamin C Serum every day and night and I’ve seen a huge improvement in my skin.

What was the most shocking thing you discovered about the pharmaceutical industry when you started working here?

There’s a lot, but if I were to choose one thing it would be the complexity and lack of transparency when it comes to answering the simple question of, “Does this product contain any animal-derived ingredients?”  Some pharmaceutical companies take a long time or don't answer at all when you ask. This happens because companies get ingredients from different places, causing delays or mistakes in their response. Using independent third-party verification is important to make sure products are high-quality.

What was your favorite VeganMed project or initiative you've worked on so far?

Throughout my time with VeganMed, I've had the opportunity to collaborate with different people and companies. One of my favorite collaborations we did was with Rael and the Pill Club. I have always been passionate about Women's Health, so being able to lead an initiative that combined women's health and the work we're doing at VeganMed felt like a full circle moment for me. Other than that, I am so proud of the impact we're making to help the Alpha-gal community. When I first started with VeganMed I had no idea it existed until I went through our archives of inquiries. I started to notice people coming to us stating they had Alpha-gal Syndrome (AGS) and that's when I started to do more research on this. Now, we have become one of the most trusted resources for these patients and I feel so honored to help the AGS community as best as we can.

What do you like to do for fun?

I enjoy spending time with my Frenchie, Scooby. Before adopting him I loved to constantly travel and explore new places. Journaling is another activity I cherish, as it allows me to capture and reflect upon my experiences, thoughts, and emotions.
