The search for naproxen products without animal-derived ingredients can be long and arduous. Scanning label after label only to be stopped by "magnesium stearate" or "shellac." You can develop a headache just in the process of finding a suitable pain reliever!
"Do vegan pain relievers exist?"
Our team of pharmacists has scoured through thousands of products to find a handful that do not contain animal ingredients. Earlier this year, we found animal-free ibuprofen, animal-free acetaminophen, and animal-free aspirin. We are stoked to add animal-free naproxen to the list!
According to WebMD, naproxen is used to relieve mild to moderate pain from various conditions. It also reduces pain, swelling, and joint stiffness from arthritis. This medication is known as a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) and works by blocking your body's production of certain natural substances that cause inflammation.
Looking for a different brand name for your country? Naproxen was first introduced in 1976, under the prescription brand names Naprosyn and Anaprox. It remains a prescription-only drug in much of the world. In the United States, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved it as an over-the-counter (OTC) drug in 1994, making it easily accessible for acute pain relief and arthritis pain. In the United Kingdom, 250 mg tablets of naproxen were approved for OTC sale under the brand name Feminax Ultra in 2008, for the treatment of primary dysmenorrhoea. Aleve became available over-the-counter in most provinces in Canada about 10 years ago.
