Everything You Need to Know About the Alpha-gal Syndrome Test

What tests are available for Alpha-gal Syndrome (AGS)?

The primary diagnostic tool is a blood test that detects specific immunoglobulin-E (IgE) antibodies to alpha-gal (alpha-gal sIgE). It’s crucial to ensure your physician orders the correct test if you suspect AGS! See the table below for guidance on test types and their corresponding lab codes at common clinics.

  • Viracor Test Code: 30039

  • Quest Test Code: 10554

  • Labcorp Test Code: 650001

  • Walk-in-Lab Test Code: 10554

In addition to blood tests, skin tests may also be used to assess reactions to allergens like pork or beef, though they are less reliable.

Can I get a test done without my doctor ordering it?

Yes, you can! Both Walk-in-Lab and Quest have an alpha-gal test available for purchase without the need for a doctor’s order! Walk-in-Lab's Alpha Galactose (Gal) Allergy IgE Blood Test costs $89 and results typically take 3-5 business days. Quest's Alpha-gal Syndrome Allergy Panel costs $131 and results typically take a few business days. However, make sure that you discuss the results with your physician to ensure that they are aware of any changes that need to be made to your medications or therapy plans!

What if my blood test is negative but I still react to animal products?

Even if your serum test shows negative results, false negatives can happen! A false negative is when a test wrongly shows that a condition isn’t present, even though it is. If you have a history of reactions to mammalian products despite a negative blood test, there are several steps you can take!

  • Evaluate surrogate markers (beef, pork, lamb) through skin and serum IgE testing.

  • Consider testing for cat serum albumin (Fel d2) to identify potential Pork Cat Syndrome.

  • Test for IgE antibodies to porcine and bovine gelatin.

  • Use skin testing with alpha-gal-containing biologics like cetuximab.

  • Explore basophil activation testing for further insights.

How to Read Alpha-gal Test Results

Test Type

Positive Result

Galactose-alpha-1,3 galactose IgE antibody levels

> 0.10 kU/L

Total IgE antibody levels

> 2 IU/ml or > 2% of total IgE

What is a positive alpha-gal test result and its implications?

It's possible to have a positive test result for alpha-gal without experiencing any reactions to mammalian ingredients. In such cases, you're considered sensitized to alpha-gal but don’t necessarily have Alpha-gal Syndrome. However, if you do experience reactions and have a positive alpha-gal lab test, your physician can diagnose you with AGS (medical code Z91.014). It’s crucial to have AGS documented in your medical file so that healthcare providers are aware that your medications need to be adjusted to avoid animal-derived ingredients. If your provider needs assistance, suggest they partner with VeganMed to ensure patient safety!
